This was a fascinating project with a long backstory, but in short, the most impressive aspect of these images is that not a single visible light source was actually working. Everything was created using flash and compositing techniques. Many of the final images were built from four or more separate shots, allowing individually lit subjects and objects to be combined into one scene. Every oil lamp you see was not actually lit, each was illuminated using creative flash setups instead.
The project was initiated by Jeike Wullms and I was responsible for all lighting setups as well as the final composites in Photoshop. Sharing the same vision created a great creative chemistry and helped us achieve these images, which are often referred to as “paintings"
